And just like that, the creative muse returned... Mailman IV is finally back on track after a lengthy hiatus (and nearly ending up in the bin!) Updates to follow. (Big thanks to the recent royal rumbles and a timely reminder of Bojo the Clown's Covid care home cull for the nudge in the right direction. It's a chirpy one!)

13/03/22 - I've been struggling to figure out how best to virtue signal my opposition to what's going on in Ukraine currently (and to pointless, avoidable war in general) but I think now I've cracked it.
From the comfort of my office/studio/arm chair, I will happily double and donate any 2022 proceeds from my 2011 anti-war song 'When The War Is Won' (and the EP it's from) to UNICEF's fundraising efforts to help children in two of the most war-torn countries in the world currently: Ukraine and Yemen.

Since the beginning of 2021 I've been gradually writing and recording tracks for the fourth Mailman album 'The Lighthouse & The Rocks'. No schedule or plan yet, I'm not in any rush. But I can tell you it will be a fairly proggy and orchestral influenced affair but still very much guitar driven and pop song orientated. Here's a recent video of brand new track 'The Best Days'. Stay tuned...

Obviously, visiting studios is an issue currently, so it will help if you have a home set up for recording, you'd then use Dropbox or We Transfer to send me audio/MIDI files.
If your recording set up or skills in that area are lacking, I'm very good at 'fixing' and making things work that you might think were un-salvageable (up to a point), but the better quality the source material the better. I can guide you through any recording issues via Skype etc. if need be.
If the results are decent, I can also probably get tracks released on all digital platforms through my distribution agreement with AWAL (Artists Without a Label) at no charge. It just has to meet a certain quality threshold.
If we all put this time to good use there's no reason why lots of good couldn't come out of the current crisis. Music and art is everything, it always was - but especially now! So let me know if this is of interest via the contact form.

05/06/19 - Released 21st June, the 6th 2019 Mailman single 'Sunshine Heart' features original Cutting Crew bassist Colin Farley and legendary session drummer Clem Cattini who has played on over 40 classic UK number ones by the likes of T-Rex, Dusty Springfield and The Walker Brothers. He's 82 now and retired.
It takes around 1000 sales to make the Top 40. 1000 streams equals one sale. Can we get him one more hit...?

12/11/18 - Well, sadly Mailman / 'Yang Yin' didn't make the shortlists for the 2019 MPG awards categories that they were nominated in. Not that surprising considering the very stiff competition from the likes of Arctic Monkeys and Tori Amos...!
But congratulations to Mandy Parnell who HAS been shortlisted in the 'Mastering Engineer of the Year' category for her work on various albums over the last 12 months - including 'Yang Yin'!

03/11/18 - Well this is nuts... turns out as well as 'Yang Yin' being in the running for 'UK Album of the Year' at the 2019 Music Producers Guild - MPG Awards, I'm also in the 'Breakthrough Producer of the Year' and 'Self-Producing Artist of the Year' categories, while Mandy Parnell - Mastering Engineer is in the running for 'Mastering Engineer of the Year' for her work on various projects including 'Yang Yin' (other projects include David Gilmour and Björk...!)
Full members of the MPG now have until midnight on 4th Nov to vote for their favourites in order to determine the three shortlisted names for each category at the awards ceremony in February.
Now - considering I'm up against the likes of Arctic Monkeys (!), Manic Street Preachers (!) and Tori Amos (!), I'll be VERY surprised if an unsigned, penniless, commercially challenged artist/producer like myself makes any shortlists... but you never know!!

He's 82 now and retired.

12/11/18 - Well, sadly Mailman / 'Yang Yin' didn't make the shortlists for the 2019 MPG awards categories that they were nominated in. Not that surprising considering the very stiff competition from the likes of Arctic Monkeys and Tori Amos...!
But congratulations to Mandy Parnell who HAS been shortlisted in the 'Mastering Engineer of the Year' category for her work on various albums over the last 12 months - including 'Yang Yin'!

03/11/18 - Well this is nuts... turns out as well as 'Yang Yin' being in the running for 'UK Album of the Year' at the 2019 Music Producers Guild - MPG Awards, I'm also in the 'Breakthrough Producer of the Year' and 'Self-Producing Artist of the Year' categories, while Mandy Parnell - Mastering Engineer is in the running for 'Mastering Engineer of the Year' for her work on various projects including 'Yang Yin' (other projects include David Gilmour and Björk...!)
Full members of the MPG now have until midnight on 4th Nov to vote for their favourites in order to determine the three shortlisted names for each category at the awards ceremony in February.
Now - considering I'm up against the likes of Arctic Monkeys (!), Manic Street Preachers (!) and Tori Amos (!), I'll be VERY surprised if an unsigned, penniless, commercially challenged artist/producer like myself makes any shortlists... but you never know!!

13/08/17 - Raaaaant..... (music below, scroll if not interested!) So someone commented on a friend's thread that the whole depiction of #Trump as the epitome of evil is irrational and that he is no better or worse than any President that has gone before.
Well guess what - I couldn't agree more.
And I am very obviously not any kind of Trump supporter.
The US is an empire, all empires are fascistic entities by definition. Don't pretend to yourself otherwise - empires are literally built on the raping and pillaging of weaker nations and peoples. The US has been doing it for decades. Genocide, slavery, torture, you name it, empires commit it - all in the name of 'the greater good', naturally (aka: supremacy - racial, religious, nationalist or whatever).
But the US empire is crumbling, as all empires do eventually. The demonisation of Trump is quite deliberate. He is just the latest shop frontman, so obviously inept and unsuitable that he will inevitably be blamed for the entirety of the US empire's crimes at some point and quite possibly it's official demise.
But he didn't start that project. It's been going on for generations.
It's the monsters behind the scenes pulling the global geopolitical strings and trying to rinse those final months and years of empire that we need to worry about. They are the bad guys. As are the prospective replacement empires on all sides. And yes, they are all mad enough to do whatever it takes to achieve their aims - including nuking each other's innocent bystanders.
The problem, as always, is empire. It is nothing more than the outward expression of deeply disconnected and irreversibly traumatised child bullies. We urgently need to move beyond this paradigm if we are to survive it.
Take away their power, put them in prison (and/or therapy), reclaim governance for what it should be i.e the ACTUAL common good, the responsible and mature administration of shared resources (including taxation) and only allow qualified, mature, sane and fully developed adults any semblance of that responsibility.
Simples... NOT!!
But it needs to happen. Understand this, work towards it in any small way you can and you will at least have ceased to be part of the problem and become part of the solution.

28/04/17 - So often when you start talking about the possibilities of how much more sustainable, progressive and evolved human society could be, people roll off the almost scripted "that's all very well but people are greedy & selfish, it's just human nature" response. It's such a lot of nonsense. For tens, if not hundreds of thousands of years, people were NOT greedy & selfish to the point of it utterly defining human society and the direction everything was headed. That phenomena is only a few thousand years old and correlates with the dawn of empire and the post-conquest era. If you doubt this look it up. What's happened is that the spoils of empire have resulted in people's greed and selfishness being unduly stimulated and rewarded. That's all. But none of that should mean people are so short sighted and self-absorbed that they don't see the benefit to themselves of a sustainable, progressive and evolved society and the obvious dangers to all of us of the alternative. It is actually self defeating to be so inclined. So not so much human nature, as an aberrant, self-destructive, learned behaviour. We can either acknowledge this, make changes and pull things back from the brink or we can accelerate into the abyss. If you're trotting out the 'humans are selfish' trope, you've given up.

Climate change and the inherently bullying nature of hierarchical society notwithstanding, one of the biggest problems the human race faces currently is propagandist media and the inability of most people to correctly assess and reject it.
Rupert Murdoch's empire; the Mail / Express / Sun; the BBC to a large extent; the internet land likes of Alex Jones, David Icke, Stefan Molyneux etc... so empowered are the bullshit merchants of this world that intelligent, serious people are now talking about how we all live in a 'post-truth' society - as if that isn't the most insane and blatantly Orwellian societal construct imaginable.
If we can't effectively challenge this machinery of disinformation and render it obsolete by empowering people to see through it, then we're all just pissing in the wind.
To do this, we need to first make sure we know what we're talking about (think critically, research thoroughly, transcend own biases etc.) and then we need to BE the new media.
Facebook and the like are a good practice ground for this but are of very limited usefulness due to the algorithms being purposely designed to create echo chambers in which mass reach is impossible and preaching to the choir is as good as it gets.
Mainstream art and music have for the longest time been purposely restricted to the throwaway and banal and as such are wholly ineffective mediums for the communication of ideas and truth.
Until we the people learn how to transcend all this, see it for what it is and then put ourselves in the driving seat of all these methods of communication, we're basically screwed. That's the bottom line.
Achieve that and anything is possible.

20/07/15 - So I had my first gig with the new acoustic Mailman line up on Saturday at a private party in the grounds of a beautiful 17th Century house in the middle of nowhere... and during our last song there were fireworks - literally! We finished with a cover of Rockin' In The Free World and on the line "We got a thousand points of light..." the sky suddenly, and completely unexpectedly, lit up! We jammed out the ending and finished almost bang on the last firework. Bonkers, random, pure chance and perfect timing! Not a bad first gig... :)
11/06/15 - People often ask me about my lyrics, I've even heard people singing along to Frontiers at gigs - so I threw together a lyric video for it . And for the more dance floor orientated, I threw together another lyric video also for the SJE Records remix.

17/01 - Hi all, here is the Not News! The début album 'No News Is Good News' is finally taking shape, apologies for the wait. It's a proper album for album lovers, not just a collection of songs or singles plus filler. As much as I love and embrace the brave new world of the digital music industry, I'm not too interested in 'consumer trends' - art exists for its own sake, in my view. And largely lost as it may be, building an album to be experienced as one thing is an art-form in its own right and one that I love. The reason it's taken me so long to get round to recording one is because doing it properly is no mean feat - especially when you are unsigned, independent and your own worst critic etc... but I'm finally excited about it! :) This album has been many years in the making, all things considered, and is as much a retrospective as it is current so it needs to be right. All will be revealed in due course... thanks for waiting! NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWS !!!
